The Philadelphia Orchestra's 146th Anniversary Concert and Ball was held Saturday, January 25th,beginning with the concert at the Academy of Music featuring guest pianist, Lang Lang. The white-tie event raises funds for the restoration of the Academy of Music, the nation's oldest Concert Hall and Opera House. The Hyatt at the Bellevue hosted the ball after the concert, with eight different bands, library-turned-cigar room, and beautiful floral centerpieces for the 1,800 guests to enjoy. The Young Friends' decorations were a bit bizarre though - a flashlight pointed downward at an upside-down rosebud in a glass vase. There were more gorgeous dresses milling around than at Suky Rosan and Sophie Curson's combined.

Philadelphia Magazine held the third annual Philly Cooks!, a chef competition to benefit MANNA, the Metropolitan AIDS Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance, on Wednesday, January 22nd at the Hyatt Regency at Penn's Landing. Guests made the rounds stopping at favorite restaurants' tables to sample appetizers, entrees, desserts and coffee.

Philadelphia Magazine's Volunteer of the year, Willard Rouse, was presented with a gorgeous bronze statue in recognition of his generous works. Last year's Volunteer of the Year, Anne Hamilton, was there to cheer him on with the rest of the guests at the Ritz Carlton's ballroom.

Wednesday, January 8th, The American Jewish Committee's 2003 Civic Achievement Award was presented to PECO President Kenneth G. Lawrence at the Westin Philadelphia. The AJC is a civil rights and human relations organization that, for nearly 100 years, has advocated advancing democracy, pluralism and mutual understanding of different cultures.
