On Tuesday, September 13, 2011, Dr. Robert M. Gates was honored with this year's Liberty Medal for his five decades of service to the United States as the director of the CIA and as the civilian head of America's armed forces. Gates has received wide bipartisan support and has throughout his career been dedicated to promoting effective diplomacy, defending our freedom, and supporting the American troops. Participating in the ceremony were National Constitution Center President and CEO David Eisner, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, and ABC News’ Bob Woodruff. On Saturday, September 10, 2011, guests flocked to JAM out for a great cause at Popi's Italian Restaurant. Guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, drinks, dinner and raffles. DJ Benja Styles of Noche and Sumo Lounge in Center City provided the entertainment for the cocktail party which benefited the American Cancer Society. JAM is a Philadelphia philanthropic organization consisting of individuals whose mission is to assist in funding nonprofit organizations that directly improve the health and well being of patients battling cancer. On Friday, September 9, 2011, Philadelphia magazine, Waverly Custom Homes, LLC and the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House welcomed sponsors and friends to Philadelphia magazine’s Tenth Annual Design Home® in Haverford. The preview party and ribbon-cutting ceremony kicked off a month of tours and special events. Guests enjoyed food by Carlino’s Specialty Foods and Catering, Finlandia, Gentleman Jack, and Chambord cocktails, Korbel California Champagne, and Bonterra Vineyards wines while exploring the renovated 1928 Main Line manor home. On Thursday, September 8, 2011, Wills Eye Institute held its 23rd Annual Form in Art Exhibition. Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception while viewing the showcases of artwork created by visually impaired artists of the Form in Art class at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Following the exhibition was the dedication of the William Tasman, MD, Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology and the Investiture of its Inaugural Recipient, Julia A. Haller, MD, Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at Wills. Both doctors were honored for their distinguished careers and continuing contributions to the field of Ophthalmology.
