A Montgomery County teenager died after suffering head trauma at a Philadelphia hockey game, the Philadelphia medical examiner reports.

Nick Bond, an 18-year-old from Springfield, was rushed to the hospital Sunday morning after complaining of a headache and collapsing after a hockey game at Wissahickon Skating Club in Chestnut Hill.

“He was a fiery and skilled competitor who believed that success on and off the ice was built on teamwork and friendship,” Wissahickon Skating Club president Kevin Hamel wrote on the club’s website. “Year after year Nick was selected by his teammates and coaches as team captain. He lead with confidence and compassion.

“Though somewhat diminutive, Nick fearlessly challenged every opposing player regardless of size. He was, without question, the epitome of what we want most in our children. Most recently, Nick was passing along those valued traits to our younger generation of skaters as he volunteered time with the Squirt hockey skaters and the Basic Skills program.”

The medical examiner ruled Bond’s death an accident. He died Monday at Albert Einstein Medical Center. The cause of death was complications from head trauma.
