Donald Trump Went to Wawa and Bought Tastykakes

This morning Donald Trump made a bold move to win the hearts and minds of Philadelphia area voters: He went to a Wawa.

Yes, Trump and his entourage ducked into Wawa store No. 8058 on West Dekalb Pike in King of Prussia this morning after a speech at the Doubletree Hotel next door.

Per a pool report from the traveling press corps, Trump greeted all of the approximately 15 customers in the store and took selfies with three of them. Pool reporter David Martosko, U.S. political editor of The Daily Mail, wrote that Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway “picked out a box of Krimpets and five individual fruit pies: caramel apple, blueberry and cherry, lemon and pumpkin pie.”

Tiffany Trump, Donald’s daughter, also grabbed a fruit pie but the pool reporter was not able to identify which flavor it was. (As a Penn graduate, Tiffany is likely familiar with the Wawa at 38th and Spruce.) At his speech at the Doubletree, Trump said he’d call for a special session of Congress to “repeal and replace” Obamacare (Just in time!). He was asked at the Wawa if he’d talked to Congress about it, but said he’d be doing that “very soon.”

The Wawa visit lasted three minutes. Per a King of Prussia native, that Wawa is “the worst” of the three Wawas in KOP. Eric Trump, Donald’s son, tweeted: “I love WaWa! This is a stop I regret missing! From Jacksonville Florida!” Yes, a Trump visit to Wawa is also a chance to see which national media members and campaign figures write it as “WaWa.” I found three, whom we shall call out by name: Fox’s Chris Snyder, Bloomberg’s Kevin Cirilli (who was once an intern at Philadelphia magazine and should know better), and the AP’s Jonathan Lemire. NPR’s Sarah McCammon got it right, but said “whatever” to Wawa’s exalted status as The Best Convenience Store. That’s even worse!

Trump is the second consecutive Republican nominee to visit a Wawa. Mitt Romney went to a Wawa in Quakertown during the 2012 campaign.

Oddly enough, that visit caused a media kerfuffle when a video shown on MSNBC was edited and made it seem Romney was amazed by the chain’s touch screen ordering system. Why that would be considered a gaffe is ridiculous — Wawa’s touch screen ordering system is amazing — but Andrea Mitchell had to “address” the clip on her show.
