Police Seek Suspects in Rittenhouse Square Shooting

A 39-year-old cyclist was shot while reportedly trying to thwart a robbery. He is expected to survive.

A 39-year-old man was reportedly shot shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday night as he attempted to break up a robbery in Rittenhouse Square.

Witnesses said the man, who was apparently riding a bicycle, attempted to intervene when two armed men tried to rob a small group of people near 19th and Walnut streets, according to 6ABC. Police were called after shots were fired, which sent people fleeing to safety from one of the city’s busiest parks.

The victim was reportedly shot multiple times. He was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital and was reported in critical condition as of last night. He is expected to survive.

The suspects fled the scene. Police are reviewing surveillance video and have not released the name of the victim; a timeline of the incident is expected later today.

Witnesses said one of the men involved in the robbery frequents the park, the Inquirer reports.
