Brey, a Montgomery County native, moved to Philadelphia in 2005 and earned a master’s in journalism from Temple University in 2011. As a PlanPhilly staff reporter for the past five years, he has covered City Council, the city’s zoning board, and the Planning Commission, and written both breaking and investigative stories on land use and development issues. Brey’s beat reporting on historic preservation issues received an honorable mention in the 2016 Keystone Awards.

“Jared, who helped build PlanPhilly into the city’s urbanism outlet of record, is an incisive, deeply sourced reporter who knows how to break stories,” Kerkstra said. “Along with contributing to our political and commercial development coverage, he will serve our growing news team as a general-assignment reporter.” Kerkstra added that he expects to announce additional hires, a business and technology reporter and a news curator, in the next few weeks.

Brey has also served as a program coordinator for the Center for Public Interest Journalism and written for the Inquirer and Daily News, City Paper, Business Journal, and Metropolis. He begins work at the magazine on April 25th.
