The LeSean McCoy Saga Is Playing Out on Sports Talk Radio

After FOP prez John McNesby told WIP that the ex-Eagles player should be charged with a crime, DA Seth Williams responded — on WIP, of course.

Earlier today we told you about Philly FOP President John McNesby’s comments on LeSean McCoy. Speaking on the WIP Morning Show with Angelo Cataldi — yes, the same people who bring you Wing Bowl — the head of the cops’ union in Philly said he wanted LeSean McCoy charged with a crime stemming from a fight at the Old City club Recess.

Now District Attorney Seth Williams has responded on a different WIP show, the Mike & Ike Show with Michael Barkann and former Eagles player Ike Reese. Yes, the saga of ex-Eagles running back LeSean McCoy is playing out on sports talk radio. He isn’t even on the anymore!

“There is no timetable other than us getting it right,” Seth Williams said on the radio this afternoon.

“I just heard a little recording you had of my friend John McNesby, the president of the FOP, and I like to say he’s a great advocate for his members, but I was elected by the citizens of Philadelphia to charge just the right people with the right crimes,” Williams continued. “Nothing more, nothing less.”

Williams wouldn’t answer specific questions about the case on the radio. Earlier, Williams refuted ESPN reports that arrests were imminent. (That’s obviously true, since no arrests have been made and that report was a week and a half ago.)

Williams also released a written statement to the media:

My team and I are continuing to investigate the incident that took place at the Recess Lounge. Like with all investigations, I don’t comment about what I will or will not do until all of the evidence has been thoroughly reviewed.

I understand that people are interested in the outcome of our investigation, but we’re not going to rush because some people are impatient — and to say that I am unwilling to prosecute difficult cases is a little misinformed. I’m the DA who has prosecuted police, gone after priests who shielded pedophiles, lawmakers who were caught on tape taking money for political favors and the people who attacked a gay couple in Center City.

The people of Philadelphia elected me to charge the right people with the right crimes nothing more and nothing less. My only goal is to get it right, not fast. The last thing we need is a rush to judgment.

I can handle the challenge of difficult cases and I’m only going to operate on one timeline: The timeline that ends when all the evidence is collected, has been reviewed and I have made the decision to charge or not charge a case.

An attorney for McCoy told the Buffalo News “I’m here to say and I’m telling you that McCoy did nothing wrong, nothing wrong. … And he was sober.”
