Philly Cop Arrested for Assault

Officer Joseph Marion faces dismissal after hitting two people in a West Oak Lane parking lot.

Philadelphia Police have arrested one of their own in connection with an attack that took place at a Dunkin’ Donuts in West Oak Lane last winter.

Officer Joseph Marion, 39, a four-year veteran of the force, was arrested today and charged with simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

Officials say that on February 17, Marion was sitting in a vehicle parked outside the Dunkin’ Donuts at 1630 E. Wadsworth Avenue when a man spreading salt on its parking lot from a shopping cart lost control of the cart, which struck Marion’s vehicle. Marion then got out of the vehicle and began hitting the man. When a woman who witnessed the assault intervened to try to stop it, Marion assaulted her as well.

The police Internal Affairs Bureau investigated the incident, which led to today’s arrest. Commissioner Charles Ramsey has suspended Marion for 30 days with intent to dismiss.

Marion is assigned to the 25th District in North Philadelphia. He was not on duty at the time of the incident.
