Three young people were killed in a one-car accident overnight in the Bustleton section of Philadelphia.

Two female passengers — a 16-year-old and and a female of unknown age — and a 20-year-old man were reported dead on scene, according to a Philadelphia Police press release on the incident.

The press release states that “at approximately 11:44 pm 2007 Acura was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Sandmeyer Lane when it struck a tree. The vehicle split in two and ejected two female passengers … were pronounced at the scene.”

A fourth passenger, a 17-year-old boy, was rushed to Aria Torresdale Hospital in critical condition with reported severe injuries to his head, femur and pelvis. He was later transported via Medevac to a Jefferson University Hospital trauma center for surgery. Hours later, around 4 am, police say, a 19-year-old man was transported to Einstein Medical Center privately.

NBC Philadelphia reports thecar that might have been involved in a street-racing incident. Philadelphia Police captain Deshawn Beaufort, who responded to the scene, told NBC Philadelphia, “You have a situation where yhave teenagers high-speed, driving the car, thinking they’re having a good time and it only takes a second to lose control of a vehicle and have a senseless loss of life.”

The crash is under police investigation and Philadelphia Police Department’s accident investigation team will hold a 2:00 pm press conference to address the incident.
