Underground Fire Knocks Out Power in Society Hill

The fire was first reported when smoke began to pour out of manhole covers near 2nd and Walnut.

An underground fire left about a hundred PECO customers in Center City without power on Thursday.

The transformer fire started near 2nd and Walnut Streets on the border between Old City and Society Hill. The first call, about smoking manholes, came in at 10:45 a.m. Most of the customers without power are in the Society Hill Towers.

The underground fire caused traffic problems today as well. Walnut Street is closed between 2nd and 3rd Streets, according to the city’s Office of Emergency Management. The Fire Department remains on scene.

PECO says power is expected to be restored sometime this afternoon.
