Police Kill Man in Northeast Philadelphia After Traffic Stop

Police say the man was armed and the gun was "totally visible. It’s the butt of a gun that’s actually in the console between the passenger seat.”

Philadelphia Police say an officer shot and killed an armed man Monday in the Mayfair section of Northeast Philadelphia. The incident began when police pulled over a rented Dodge Charger with Florida tags at 2:30 this morning on the 6700 block of Frankford Avenue.

A confrontation took place, police say, and an officer fired a shot at the man, hitting him in the head. The 26-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Police Capt. George Fuchs says the gun was “totally visible.”

“It’s the butt of a gun that’s actually in the console between the passenger seat,” Fuchs told CBS Philly, “kind of stuck down the middle between the console and the passenger seat.” Police later released a statement on the shooting:

The male forced his way back to his vehicle and attempted to retrieve the gun when one of the officers discharged his weapon, striking the male once in the head.

Both officers at the scene have only been on the job 10 months. As is standard procedure, Internal Affairs was interviewing the officer who fired the fatal shot. That officer’s partner was shaken up and taken to the hospital after the shooting.
