Protesters Decry Police Headquarters Move to West Philly

Philadelphia Police plan a $200 million renovation of the old Provident Mutual Life Insurance building at 46th and Market streets.

A group of about 75 protesters denounced the proposed move of police headquarters to West Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Police have long planned to move to the former Provident Mutual Life Insurance building at 46th and Market streets. The Roundhouse, police headquarters at 8th and Race streets, is considered to be the worst building ever by pretty much everyone who has ever worked in it.

A community meeting was held last night about the move at West Philadelphia High School ; protesters didn’t disrupt it.

“This is a neighborhood that has been terrorized by the police for years now with the Penn Police patrol boundaries extending further and further westward, combined with the patrolling of the Philadelphia Police Department – it’s just too much,” Ruby Anderson of the Philadelphia Student Union told Channel 6. Protesters told the station they plan to begin picketing in front of officials’ homes against the move.

The 13-acre campus will also host the Philadelphia Health Department and city morgue. The Provident building was built in 1926. The move is expected to be completed in 2018.
