Report: Treasurer McCord Won’t Run for Senate

Rob McCord, Pennsylvania's state treasurer, has decided against a run for Pat Toomey's U.S. Senate seat in 2016.

State treasurer Rob McCord won’t run for Pat Toomey’s U.S. Senate seat in 2016, PoliticsPA reported today.

Toomey, Pennsylvania’s junior senator, won Arlen Specter’s old Senate seat in 2010, in a close vote against former Congressman Joe Sestak. Specter, who switched to the Democratic party mid-term in 2009, was defeated by Sestak in the primary.

PoliticsPA quoted an advisor to McCord about the decision.

“While it’s typical to drag these decisions out for a while to keep your name in the paper or raise money, Rob wants to avoid that and give activist friends clear guidance,” a McCord political advisor told PoliticsPA. “He will not be running for the U.S. Senate in 2016. However, he believes we will have a great shot at winning that seat in the coming cycle and he hopes to help make that happen.”

McCord finished third in the Pennsylvania Democratic gubernatorial primary in May. His decision not to run narrows the field a bit. Sestak could run against Toomey again; he lost, percentage-wise, 51 to 49, in 2010.
