Suburban Officials Blast Possibility of New Philadelphia Casino

The state will vote on Philadelphia's long-awaited second casino license next week. People in neighboring areas are not happy about it.

Officials from Delaware County gathered today to blast the idea of a second casino in Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will vote on Tuesday to decide which bidder, if any, will get a license for a second casino in Philadelphia.

“Common sense just shows you that the gaming industry has changed,” Delaware County Councilman John McBlain said today in Ridley. “The combination of a bad, national economic climate, online gaming taking effect in many places and the saturation of the casino market has changed the game.”

McBlain said Harrah’s in Chester could lose up to 30 percent of its business if a second casino opens in Philadelphia. Revenue has decreased for Harrah’s as more casinos have opened in the area. Since the opening of the casino in Chester, the county has received $87.6 million in funds.

Politicians from other neighboring areas — including Bucks and Montgomery counties, which each have a casino — have also come out against a second Philadelphia casino. There are three casinos just outside Philadelphia: Harrah’s Philadelphia in Chester, Parx in Bensalem and Valley Forge Casino Resort in Upper Merion. And people in South Philly aren’t happy about reports the Live! casino near the stadiums is the likely winner.
