Atlantic City Woman Said to Throw Baby in the Ocean

Child rescued, mother faces charges.

Horrifying: A mother threw her baby into the ocean over the weekend. Gratifying: The baby was saved by a retired firefighter fishing nearby.

The Press of Atlantic City reports the mother, 23-year-old Patricia Shurig, has been charged with aggravated assault following Sunday afternoon’s incident. She’s being held on $100,000 bail.

Tom Bell, the retired firefighter, rescued the child and performed CPR. “She spit up a lot of water,” he told the Press. “I just ran down the jetty and gave it to the EMS people.”

Both mother and child were treated at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. [Press of Atlantic City]
