Fed-Up SEPTA Riders Carry Rowdy Passenger Off Bus

SEPTA Police Chief: ‘If somebody acts like that against an operator or a fellow rider, they’re getting arrested. We’re gonna hook them up with a cheese sandwich.’

NBC 10’s David Chang reports of an incident on the 20 bus in the Far Northeast on Friday: A passenger was acting out in the back, and the bus driver stopped the bus to ask him to get off.

The man wouldn’t, and the driver says the man then spit on him. While the driver waited for police, two passengers took matters into their own hands and lifted the dude up and out of the bus. Police arrested him a short time later.

“The big message here is that we’re not gonna take this crap against our operators,” [SEPTA Police Chief Thomas] Nestel said. “If somebody acts like that against an operator or a fellow rider, they’re getting arrested. We’re gonna hook them up with a cheese sandwich.”

Yes, a cheese sandwich! The #cheesesandwich hashtag is one of Nestel‘s favorite things to post on Twitter.

Okay, that last one is pretty excellent. (I mean, a crack baggie with pot leaves on it?)

Anyway, I made an animated GIF of the SEPTA incident.

It would have been easier if that other dude had moved from the steps on the back exit, but they did a nice job maneuvering the unruly passenger around him.

Because Septa leaves it up to passengers to protect them from other passengers?

    • Northeaster

No, pretty obviously the driver pulled over and was waiting for the cops. Reading is important.

Oh c’mon, you must be Nestel himself, with a statement like that!

        • Northeaster

No, just a guy who knows how to read.

If you ask for a cheese sandwich in Mayfair, you might not get the one you were hoping for.

What’s going to happen when – not if – an innocent passenger is hurt or killed? Septa will do everything possible to claim no responsibility & will make sure that the victim(s) and/or their families are dragged through the courts for years. I’d be willing to bet that there are already cases out there that Septa will never admit to.

I wonder if the unruly passenger may have been suffering from some psych issues. The incident would then be best viewed through the lens of mental health and the public health challenges that these types of issues present.
