WATCH: First TV Ad for Marijuana Airing in New Jersey

A TV ad for medical marijuana has begun airing on Comcast cable in New Jersey, per the company.

While New Jersey’s medical marijuana law may have its faults, marijuana is available for qualified patients in the Garden State. And now it has its own television commercial!

Calling it the “First Marijuana Television Commercial Ever Shown on a Major Network'” — quotes theirs — the press release from Marijuana Doctors says the ad will air on networks like Fox, CNN, Comedy Central, ESPN, FX and Food Network. The company we have to thank for selling this airtime? Philadelphia’s very own Comcast! Hey, it didn’t get the cash to buy NBC and Time Warner by rejecting commercial spots.

You can tell this MarijuanaDoctors.com company is on the ball, because its press release contains some excellent PR-speak:

With Comcast considered the largest mass media and communications company in the world by revenue, the commercial is expected to bring significant attention to the company.

“We recognize that the sale and use of marijuana is still considered very controversial,” MarijuanaDoctors.com CEO Jason Draizin said in the release, “and we are pleased that Comcast understands that there are legitimate businesses providing legitimate and legal services to people who have legitimate needs.” The site connects potential medical marijuana patients with doctors who will recommend it.

The ad’s cute, but it paints a world of drug dealing no different from the least believable ad from the ONDCP. Marijuana deals go more like this: Two stoners sit on a couch to play Grand Theft Auto V baked out of their minds and — if they remember — one of them exchanges $50 for a bag of weed.

Still, the street sushi dealer angle is pretty clever. I could see this commercial being done as a sketch on some average late night show. And, hey, if you want marijuana and can get it legally, it’s probably best to do it that way. Be sure to thank MarijuanaDoctors.com and Comcast for letting you know.
