Old, Nearly Washed-Up Phillies Hope to Improve by Getting Older, More Washed-Up

This is a good offseason to get rid of your best young player, right?

This doesn’t feel like the way the old Phillies were supposed to become the new Phillies:

• They acquired 36-year-old Marlon Byrd for the outfield, at a cost of $16 million over two years.

They’re talking about trading 26-year-old Dom Brown for 33-year-old Jose Bautista. Bautista is a good player … who is also 33 years old. This isn’t the 1990s, folks. Steroids don’t improbably lengthen careers anymore. (Or not as much.) Age matters!

This is going to get worse before it gets better, huh?
