Jon Runyan Won’t Run for Re-Election

Former Eagles lineman sick of Republicans.

Moderate Republican congressman Jon Runyan won’t run for reelection in 2014, leaving New Jersey’s third district (BurlCo, Ocean County) wide open. The 40-year-old Runyan (of course) said he is leaving to spend more time with his family, which includes a teenage son who plays football at St. Joe’s Prep. The real reason, many suspect, is that he’s sick of the hard-liners in his own caucus.

“Jon was frustrated – no secret,” said Burlington County Republican Chairman Bill Layton [to the Inquirer]. “For the last year he was dealing with people in the Republican Party down there giving him a hard time on the Sandy relief package, and then there was the closure of government.”

Sick of Tea Party loonies? To this we say:

No actual quotes from Jon. Just the writer’s opinion. The Sandy relief package started out with aid to the area effected by the storm. The final bill gave aid to 47 different states with nothing whatsoever to do with this storm. Part of the overall spending problem in Washington.
