Yellow Birds Is Philly’s “One Book” for 2014

Everybody encouraged to read novel about war in Iraq.

The Inquirer reports: “The Yellow Birds, a 2012 National Book Award finalist, will be named this year’s One Book One Philadelphia selection Wednesday morning in a ceremony at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Powers will join Mayor Nutter; Marie Field, chair of One Book One Philadelphia; and Siobhan A. Reardon, president and director of the Free Library, for the event.”

The New York Times gave The Yellow Birds praise in its review, saying: ” Kevin Powers has something to say, something deeply moving about the frailty of man and the brutality of war, and we should all lean closer and listen.”

The Inky adds: “The One Book One Philadelphia program gets underway Jan. 22 with an appearance by Powers at the Free Library and runs through March 19. Most of the Free Library’s 54 branches will offer events related to One Book One Philadelphia.”
