Police: Jersey Man Set Self on Fire in D.C.

New Jersey man went to D.C. to set himself ablaze.

CBS Local reports that police have identified the man who set himself on fire Monday on the National Mall in Washington D.C.: 64 year-old John Constantino of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. “Shortly after the incident, a witness told told WNEW Senior Correspondent Mark Segraves that two joggers came to the man’s aid, ripping their shirts off and trying to put the fire out.” Constantino died Monday night. His case is still under investigation.

AP adds: “John Constantino was a loving father and husband. His death was not a political act or statement, but the result of his long battle with mental illness,” his family said in a statement issued through attorney Jeffrey Cox. The statement did not address the nature of the mental illness.
