Montco Register of Wills to Appeal Judge’s Ruling Striking Down Gay Marriages

Already 174 marriage licenses for gay couples have been issued, and Montgomery County Register of Wills D. Bruce Haines doesn’t have any plans to stop his matrimonial onslaught. Even if Commonwealth Court Judge Dan Pellegrini says he should.

Montco officials said today that they would file an appeal on Haines’s behalf. It’s the latest plot point in the county’s rogue gay marriage licensing binge.

Haines began to stir up trouble in July, when he started issuing marriage licenses to gay couples in defiance of a state law that state attorney general Kathleen Kane had said she would not defend.

With Montco standing behind the “that’s unconstitutional” argument, this one is bound to escalate further. Given his attitude over the last few months, Haines is likely comfortable with that. The PA state government, however, is another story. [NBC]
