Mayor Nutter Hosts Screening of Fruitvale Station

Mayor Nutter will host a screening of Fruitvale Station at 7 p.m. tonight at the Ritz Five. Tickets to the screening are already sold out, but he will “host a Q&A relating to issues presented in the film.”

That Q&A could get sticky. The movie, after all, “is based on the true story of Oscar Grant, a young man who was killed by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle at the Fruitvale Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station in Oakland, California.” Combine that with the fact that Philly police are currently under federal review for their handling of violent incidents, and it’s easy to see why the movie might A) be relevant and B) discomfitting.
