Rowan University Adds Osteopathic Medical Degree Program

A law restructuring New Jersey’s public higher education took effect yesterday, reorganizing the structure of the state’s public universities and officially establishing Rowan University’s school of osteopathic medicine. That makes Rowan the owners and operators of not one, but two, medical school programs, with the other being their Cooper Medical School in Camden. So what’s the story behind the addition? Rowan President Ali Houshmand told CBS he hopes to double enrollment at the school over the next 10 years, increasing the schools budget and research grant funding in the process. They should face too much competition, though—the only other university in the country to offer both D.O. and M.D. programs is Michigan State. [CBS]
