House Finally Approves $50b in Sandy Aid Without GOP Support

The House of Representatives at last approved $50 billion more in funding for Hurricane Sandy relief, though a majority of House Republicans opposed the measure. The bill passed mostly with support from Democrats and Republicans from storm-ravaged areas. As with the vote on the tax portion of the fiscal cliff deal two weeks ago, Speaker John Boehner brought the bill to a vote without majority support from his own party, breaking the so-called “Hastert Rule” and further signaling the deep rift in the GOP.
