Carlos Ruiz Suspended 25 Games for Amphetamine Use

This afternoon, the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball suspended Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz for 25 games (unpaid), because he tested positive for amphetamine use, which is, apparently, against the rules. According to a press release issued by Major League Baseball, Ruiz will be allowed to participate in Spring Training but not the first 25 games of the regular season. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had this to say in a statement: “The Phillies fully support Major League Baseball’s Drug Program. We are disappointed by the news of this violation of the program. We will support Carlos in an appropriate manner and move forward to achieve our goal to play championship-caliber baseball in 2013.”

According to the Phils, Ruiz won’t be able to play until the team’s April 28th game against the Mets. No word on whether the hefty Ruiz was trying to improve his game, lose weight, or both. [Phillies]
