What Happens When You Let Gay Philly Activists Into the White House [UPDATED]

Last Friday, an attaché of important gay people from Philadelphia made a trip to Washington D.C. as invited guests of President Barack Obama for the White House’s first-ever gay pride reception. There, they danced to the sounds of a Marine Corps band; they dined on crab cakes and canapés; they hand-delivered letters from concerned citizens like this 18-year old who has had four people close to him gunned down, and noted rhyming raconteur CA Conrad; and some of them took advantage of photo opportunities to give the late President Ronald Reagan the middle finger.

“It’s not a gesture that I would use in the White House when representing our city and our community,” opines Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal (center), who opted for a sarcastic thumbs-up pose in front of the portrait of George W. Bush over the more vulgar one demonstrated by his Reagan-loathing peers, Matthew “Matty” Hart (left), and self-taught photographer turned toast-of-the-town Zoe Strauss (right).

“I have friends who work in that building,” Segal explains. “I’m not going to do something that could embarrass them or that could somehow damage a campaign that is so important. ‘Be on your best behavior,’ my staff told me.’ I think they know me too well.”

This wasn’t Segal’s first trip to the White House, having twice visited during Bill Clinton’s gay-friendly tenure. “One of the things on my bucket list was to dance with my boyfriend at the White House,” remarks Segal.”And this is the second time I got to do it. We come up to the main foyer, and what do they play? Barbra Streisand. ‘The Way We Were.’ And I thought, Are they going to play nothing but Barbra, Bette and Lady Gaga? I was waiting for ‘Over the Rainbow.’ I mean, this is the Marine band!” Clearly, Segal, a dedicated activist but also an astute political hobnobber, wants to be invited back.

But his counterparts couldn’t seem to care less. Hart posted his photo on Facebook with the caption, “Fuck Reagan.” Strauss simply posted hers without commentary. After all, the murderous facial expression and double-barreled bird-flipping seem to speak for themselves. Comments ranged from “you forgot to add with a chainsaw” on Hart’s “Fuck Reagan” note, to my personal favorite, “star wars … up yours,” on Strauss’s.

Strauss, who is also seen here, kissing her partner beneath the Reagan portrait, declined to comment for this story (“I’m keeping out of the press!” she texted me), but made crystal clear her position on Reagan by posting on Facebook a long list of things that happened under his watch, including the Supreme Court’s Bowers v. Hardwick decision, upholding the constitutionality of Georgia’s anti-sodomy law, the Iran-Contra affair and the invasion of Grenada.

Additionally, Strauss posted Reagan’s memorable statement on LGBT rights from the 1980 campaign trail: “My criticism is that [the gay movement] isn’t just asking for civil rights; it’s asking for recognition and acceptance of an alternative lifestyle which I do not believe society can condone, nor can I.”

“Yeah, fuck Reagan,” reiterates Hart one week after the reception. “Ronald Reagan has blood on his hands. The man was in the White House as AIDS exploded, and he was happy to see plenty of gay men and queer people die. He was a murderous fool, and I have no problem saying so. Don’t invite me back. I don’t care.”

Switching gears, Hart describes the reception as “fantastic” and notes that the White House staff seemed “giddy.” “A lot of work had to happen to make this reception politically viable and possible,” he observes. “There were many service members there. I met a woman with lots of medals, an important military person, who was with her partner. And all her life, she had to be in the closet—until now. And I met a couple from Tennessee in their mid-50s, two men who have been in a relationship for 22 years and run an LGBT youth program. They could barely speak with their emotions. They kept saying, All through grade school and high school, people were telling us we’re gonna burn in hell. And here we are honored guests of Obama.

Referring to the reception and not to his photo op, Hart adds, “It was just a gesture, but a very powerful one.” Speaking of powerful gestures, Hart shot portions of the video below, which features, among other things, Segal dancing to the Marine Corps band and a wedding proposal between a female-to-male transgendered person (killer suit!) and a biological woman.

“And so is it correct to refer to this as a transgendered wedding proposal?” I asked Hart this morning, via Facebook chat, naturally. “2012 is so confusing!” His reply: “I think this is the proposal of our time. It is not so easy to categorize. Liberating.”

UPDATE 6/22 9:30 p.m.: According to Fox News, the White House has issued a statement rebuking some of the behavior described in this article: “While the White House does not control the conduct of guests at receptions, we certainly expect that all attendees conduct themselves in a respectful manner. Most all do. These individuals clearly did not. Behavior like this doesn’t belong anywhere, least of all in the White House.”

    Like this is a surprise to anyone? Homosexuality gives the finger to everyone and everybody since at its core is open rebellion to the norms of society. Anything traditional or foundational has to be turned over. Can’t have marriage? Give them the finger and make them change 5,000 years of traditional family life and try to redefine marriage. Their job that day was to represent the gay community and lobby for their various causes. Their behavior was unprofessional and harmful to the community they claim to represent.     And Romans 1 says, after speaking of women with women, being unnatural…

    “And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

    And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; ”

    I thank God for all of the babies who are spared this life. It’s a sad corrupt world we live in that is plummeting deeper every day.

    I love this! I can’t believe anyone sane is upset in any way about this. It’s a painting of a dead man who helped help to ruin our country and create the 1%. The activists were merely expressing their right to free speech and using this right quite well. Reagan, again dead, is unable to be offended by this (the whole dead thing kind of precludes this). Reagan was worthy of getting the finger while alive, and perhaps he did and perhaps was even offended, but I doubt it would have meant much to him, especially coming from gay activists. He was no friend to the homosexual community. Or the poor. Or other minorities.

    And anyone who comments that they would support LGBT rights if not for the behavior of these, or any other gay activists, is an ignorant hypocrite.     This is disgusting, I am a gay person trying to gain acceptance about my sexuality. Militant, Ignorant, and childish people that do this thing set us back years. I don’t agree with a lot of government policies, but this kind of behavior really disturbs me. This is not the way to gain acceptance and the White House should toughen their policy on how to conduct yourself among our leaders.     Why are those who most strongly clamor for tolerance and respect the ones most likely to be unwilling to afford the same tolerance and respect they desire to others? Reagan didn’t create AIDS, nor did he promote leading a lifestyle that allowed AIDS to flourish. Condoms existed in the 80’s, using inter-venous drugs was a personal choice. Take personal responsibility for your actions. Be an adult. Some people have no class, no matter what setting you put them in.

    The book and movie “And the Band Played On” pretty much blamed the whole AIDS epidemic on Reagan being elected in 1980 and 84. What they conveniently forget to mention is that the Democrats controlled both houses of congress throughout the 70s and 80s, and they didn’t do any more than Reagan did. So if the Democrats in Congress did nothing, where do they get their logic that a Democrat in the White House would have done something?

    People often say: “It’s not personal. It’s just business/politics.” The reality of it is that all business and politics are VERY personal. These things affect our friends, families and children – everything and everyone we know and with whom we interact.

    While I might have acted differently from my friends, I cannot blame them for their feelings as they have felt the losses of Mr. Reagan’s policies differently and perhaps more severely than I have. I understand the dead are due a certain amount of respect, especially those who lead; however, those who were directly affected and died as a direct result of decisions and policies of that leadership are equally deserving of respect.

    I watch this year’s presidential race and wonder where has our nation’s sanity gone? Our leaders comport themselves like children in a playground brawl. Where are the issues? What happened to making change for the better? We talk about bullying with regard to children, but we do it as adults with little regard for the outcome of such unrelenting hate.

    As one who has spoken out against injustice and inequality for all, I find your article lacking in perspective. It has shamed people and made them targets for expressing their feelings about a leader who had no compassion for their friends and family and denied them the very same right you and your employers celebrate every month, under the 1st Amendment among others. If you truly sought balance in this story, you could have reported on the policies and decisions that made them feel that way.

    In closing, I just want to say again, while I don’t share your opinion about my friends and their behavior, I would fight for the right for you to say it. I think the consideration of their losses and the losses of the rights and respect for LGBT people, as with many disenfranchised and oppressed groups may not always be fought with the best comportment, but the blood of many has paid for the right to fight it as best as they and their families can. You would do well to consider that.

    1. Just a bunch of 14 year olds in adult bodies who haven’t yet learned what respect is. It’s not a function of a political party or even sexuality (or lake thereof), it’s what you expect others to do to you in return for what you do to them. This bunch, and the president too, haven’t learned that yet. No matter the event, the secret service who maintains order should have escorted the violators OUT. so it appears that our (dis)respectful president told them not to.

    2. Why all the personal cameras/smart phones? I visited the WH last fall and cameras were banned from entry, plus phones had to be turned off. So why is everyone prancing around openly shooting video and pictures? Another presidential directive to allow his “special” guests to bypass/not enforce the regulations? Ahhhh, the libs get all upset, yell, scream, and call out the press; but when their opposites permit the slightest infraction they totally ignore the same when THEY want to do what they want.     It’s worth pointing out that one of these queer’s said “The man was in the White House as AIDS exploded” Just because Reagan was in the White house when it was discovered dont make any of it his fault. This part of the statement is implying it’s Reagans fault AIDS came into existance. When it was first discovered nobody knew anything of it and its first reports was of a “rare cancer” we did not even begin to understand it yet, this does not make the man in the white house at the time of discovery at fault. Then Bush is to blame for West Niles because he was in office when I first heard abaout it right?. What president was in office when Cancer was discovered because I owe him a bitching for being at fault because I lost a loved one from Cancer. The queer then goes on to say Reagan was happy to see plenty of gay people die. How would he know if Reagan was happy about this.
