Philadelphia Sports Stars: Where Are They Now?

Phillies, 1963-’69
After finishing out his playing career in St. Louis and Kansas City, Rojas (given name: Octavio Victor Rojas Rivas) coached and managed before settling in as the Florida Marlins’ Spanish-language TV play-by-play man. Much to our disappointment, Cookie, who turns 70 this month, wasn’t named after our favorite food; the moniker’s an anglicization of his mother’s childhood nickname for him, “Cuqui.” Of the most famous skid in sports — the Phils’ 1964 September swoon — Rojas says, “The ways we lost games, the things that happened, you just couldn’t believe it. A ground ball would take a bad bounce, and the next guy up would hit a home run — things of that nature.” And though Philly fans may still blame his team, Rojas has another scapegoat: “What nobody talks about is that the St. Louis Cardinals won eight in a row. If the rest of the league could have beat them in just one game, we would have won the pennant.”
