Philadelphia Sports Stars: Where Are They Now?

As with Harry Truman, history seems to be reconsidering the legacy of former Eagles defensive end Mamula. After his extraordinary showing in the 1995 NFL draft combine, Eagles brass traded their first-round pick to acquire him (thereby forfeiting Warren Sapp), only to be disappointed by a five-season career plagued by injury. But some sportswriters argue Mamula may not have gotten a fair shake; his 31 sacks, for instance, rank seventh among defensive ends in franchise history. Mamula says Philly fans “were and are great,” and blames himself for not engaging the media, “because when you don’t speak to the media, they write whatever they want to.” Now 35, he lives on the Main Line with his wife and nine-year-old twins, and is a partner in CSS Inc. of Voorhees, an employee drug- and background-screening company founded by fellow former Eagle Mike Chalenski.
