The Cross-Trainer
The Cross-Trainer
GAVIN McKAY, 32, owner, Fusion Cross-training, fusioncrosstraining.com
His regimen: Four cross-training workouts each week—two upper-body, two lower-body—alternating dumbbell and suspension training for 30 to 45 minutes with cardio (“I’ll either run, bike or row”) for 25 to 35 minutes. Once in a while, he’ll hit Kelly Drive with his yellow Lab, Jackson.

Why he loves cross-training: “The sense of accomplishment. If nothing else gets done or goes right in the day, I got my workout in and I can feel good about that. The time is really a gift to myself.”

His diet: For breakfast, a mix of high-fiber and high-protein cereals, like Kashi and granola with fruit, or eggs with spinach, tomatoes and peppers. (“I wake up and I eat. I don’t fuck around.”) Lunch is usually a salad with veggies, beans, and chicken, tuna or salmon, or a chicken- or tuna-salad sandwich topped with veggies. Brought-from-home snacks like veggies and hummus or Greek yogurt and fruit hold him over until he tosses together high-protein, quality-carb ingredients for dinner.

Secret indulgence: “I looove ice cream. It’s dangerous. I eat it about three times a week, right out of the carton. It’s a terrible habit.”

The body part he loves: “I like my chest. It’s just like — bam! A strong chest on a guy shows internal fortitude.”
