Previously known as juvenile-onset diabetes, type 1 diabetes develops when the body’s immune system attacks the pancreas, destroying its ability to make insulin. The disease affects roughly 1 in 250 Americans, and often strikes children and young adults, though it can develop at any age. Risk factors may include autoimmune, environmental or genetic factors, but there is currently no known way to prevent the disease.
