A very touching new mini-documentary shot in and around Philadelphia features a series of engaging and moving discussions about not only trans identity, but the problem with society’s obsession with the “gender binary,” period.

The movie, titled M or F, features Temple professor Dr. Amanda Czerniawski, author of Fashioning Fat, along with designer and artist Wit LopezAmerica’s Next Top Model‘s Cory Wade, artist and trans advocate Robyn Ryan, Ph.D. student AJ Young, and social worker Phoenix Schneider. Filmmakers (James Kenvin, Amaris Mitchell, Katherine O’Connor, Gabrielle Szcezpanek, and Dr. Kristine Weatherston) explore the personal stories of many of the interviewees and how American culture has created unneeded restrictions on gender. Philadelphians will also recognize plenty of shots of Rittenhouse Square juxtaposed throughout the film.
