Stonewall Sports To Donate $30K to Philadelphia LGBT Organizations Tonight

Stonewall Sports Philadelphia will be celebrating a huge year by donating $30,000 to a variety of regional LGBTQ organizations at a special event this evening.

The charities will be awarded funds at this evening’s Stonewall Prom, hosted by old-school Nickelodeon favorite Lori Beth Denberg, at Philadelphia’s Field House. The Attic Youth Center, Mazzoni Center, William Way Community Center, AIDS Fund, Philadelphia FIGHT, AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania, and GALAEI will all be honored with donations ranging from $1,000 to $8,000 at the ceremony.

Adam Beck, the founder of Stonewall Sports Philadelphia, said that the goal of the sports league was to build community through sport after noticing that Philadelphia felt “dispersed, unconnected, exclusive, and dispassionate.”

“It was never about kickball itself,” he said. “I mean, if any of us wanted to play kickball, there are many different leagues throughout the city where you can do that.”

2015 was the first full year of Stonewall Philadelphia and the organization has grown from 100 players to nearly 1,000 players. In addition to kickball, the league now offers dodgeball and volleyball, and built into every Stonewall registration is “thousands of dollars to donate to the winning team’s LGBT charity of their choosing,” according to press materials for the organization.

The Stonewall Prom is held this evening from 7 to 10 pm. For tickets and more information, click here.
