New Settlement May Recognize Marriages Performed in MontCo Last Year

Twenty-seven Pennsylvania couples who married in Montgomery County last year are awaiting word on a settlement with the state that would recognize their unions performed when D. Bruce Hanes legalized marriage equality for about a week late last summer.

The settlement, filed under Ballen vs. Wolf, says their marriages would be made legal in the eyes of the state, but their anniversaries would be moved to May 20th, 2014, the day same-sex marriage became legal in Pennsylvania.

If you’ll remember, more than 200 couples got married at the time, and this settlement will only take care of 27. The Inquirer reports that many of the 200 couples got a new marriage certificate after May 20th, but those who didn’t still aren’t married. It suggests there could be around 87 couples whose unions are in limbo.
