Every hump day, a Philly woman shares her local picks for Woman Crush Wednesday. Today, The Attic Youth Center Director of Development Alyssa Mutryn.
I’m Alyssa Mutryn, and these are my picks for WCW. I am highlighting some of my favorite people who work to make Philadelphia a better place for LGBTQ youth.
This fierce agender femme is the director of The Bryson Institute of The Attic Youth Center, where people all over the city and region are trained on how to create safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ youth. Tackling homophobia and gender injustice on the daily, Kelly and the Bryson team have impacted the lives of thousands of LGBTQ youth in this city by taking the time to share their stories and providing spaces where people can talk openly about LGBTQ identities. If you want to learn a lot, talk to Kelly about social justice, gender, or Tumtum the Brussels Griffon (pictured on the left).
Jasmine is a prevention case manager for The Adolescent Initiative at CHOP where she works with youth at the Youth Study Center, Philadelphia’s Juvenile Justice program. She works hard to educate youth about safer sex, and plays a large role in making the space inclusive and affirming for the LGBTQ youth who stay there. Over her 10 years in this position, many youth have opened up to her. She has some really great stories.
Crystal’s an amazing singer-songwriter (check out her album titled Best Piece of Me), editor, and writer who, in her spare time, wrote a book to help LGBTQ youth feel supported and better understood as LGBTQ Christians. Through her IDentity Kit Project, she has spoken to many congregations about this topic and has done a tremendous amount of work to create more affirming spaces for LGBTQ Christians in the area.
Kate is the adolescent care supervisor at Mazzoni Center. She was instrumental in starting the Wednesday night Youth Drop-In Hours at Mazzoni’s medical center. Kate and her team have assisted hundreds of Philadelphia’s LGBTQ young people in accessing health insurance, medical care, and housing. Kate’s super-cute son is also pictured.
Last but not least is my love, Shay. As a third-year doctorate student in clinical psychology, she has held internships at organizations such as Women’s Therapy Center and The Attic, as a therapist working with LGBTQ youth and young adults. She’s kind of an over-achiever, so she’s also getting her masters in human sexuality and her future goal is to be a therapist serving the LGBTQ community.
