In anticipation of its 27th annual AIDS Walk Philly and AIDS Run Philly on Oct. 20, AIDS Fund released a new video that shines a spotlight on local people living with HIV, and touches on the issue of stigma that still exists around the disease.
“AIDS in Philly: Fighting the Stigma” is the fifth in a series of videos that addresses different issues surrounding HIV/AIDS locally. The work features several startling statistics, like that 26 percent of people living with HIV say that fear of stigma prevented them from seeking treatment, and that a whopping 43 percent have experienced HIV-related discrimination in the workplace. You’ll also see a handful of familiar faces, like SafeGuard LGBT Health Resource Center‘s Brian Green, and locals who talk about how they deal with stigma. Check it out below:
AIDS Walk Philly and AIDS Run Philly will bring together 15,000 participants who will help raise money to support “direct care services, prevention and education, counseling and testing, medical care, and public awareness efforts” with 29 HIV/AIDS service organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area. If you’re interested in taking part, registration is still open at aidswalkphilly.org.
