Why Jim McGreevey Should Be the Poster Child for Easter 2013

The former NJ governor exemplifies the idea of second chances in the new HBO documentary Fall to Grace.

I nominate Jim McGreevy for Easter 2013’s poster child. The former governor of New Jersey, who resigned in 2004 after he admitted engaging in an “adult consensual affair with another man,” exemplifies redemption in a new documentary that turns the cameras on his new role as a spiritual advisor to women in prison.

Fall to Grace debuted last night on HBO and was an official selection at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The doc, directed by Nancy’s daughter Alexandra Pelosi, follows McGreevey’s path from disgraced politician to out-and-proud gay man to his job counseling 40 female prisoners in a program that, according to the Associated Press, has cut recidivism by half in Hudson County, N.J. If that’s not rolling the stone away, I don’t know what is.

This article on the Huffington Post goes inside one of McGreevey’s recent counseling sessions. And to really drive home the point of how far the man has come over the years, you can check out G Philly mag editor Michael Callahan’s 2008 article that chronicles the former governor’s train wreck of a divorce from wife Dina Matos McGreevey.
