He won Mr. Gay Philly last year, now Dashiell Sears is getting national attention

Last year’s Mr. Gay Philly Dashiell Sears is making an appearance in Out magazine this month. The 21-year-old senior at Temple is an accomplished gymnast; he’s been competing on Temple’s men’s team for the past three years. “If there was anybody on the team that had a problem with people being gay,” he tells Out, “we’d probably push them off.”

As the youngest Mr. Gay, he may also be the smallest. Sears is a pint-size dynamo at five-foot-two. He also admits he gets plenty of support from the gay community during his meets.

“In a team sport, there are ways that you can exclude people from playing – you could just not pass the ball to them,” he says. “For gymnastics, if we don’t put this person up, we’re not gonna get that score and we’re not gonna win. That means it doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight or bi or whatever. If you have a good routine, who cares what everyone else thinks?”
