Listen: Hayla’s “I’m Free”

Get the party started this weekend with a club mix about a gay boyfriend

“I wrote ‘I’m Free’ because I surprisingly found out my boyfriend of seven years was cheating on me with another man,” says singer-songwriter Hayla. “But guess what? I didn’t freak out at all. Everything was cool because a person needs to be true to himself first. I was just so amazed that I didn’t figure it out sooner! We were both set free to find our true selves.”

Hayla’s dance hit has been climbing the Billboard dance charts this week – as well as finding play on satellite radio channels and in the clubs. The artist herself is no stranger to LGBT issues. Raised by lesbian moms, her biological father is a gay hairstylist. And she admits she faced a lot of discrimination growing up, which inspires her music.

“I feel so blessed to be supported by all these immensely talented guys who remixed ‘I’m Free,'” she says. “The clubs have always been a home to me and I am nothing but thankful for all the love we are feeling.”
