William Way launches new member benefits

The William Way LGBT Community Center has found a new way to encourage locals to become members of the center thanks to a new benefits program that has more than a few perks. In addition to supporting the center with one-time annual donations that start at $35, members now also receive a keychain card for discounts at 20 different locations throughout the city.

Longtime supporters may recall that the center had a similar program years ago that was phased out. But it’s been revived, says Paul Blore, the center’s executive assistant, to once again create a sense of community and support businesses that support the center. “We think it will create a lot of extra excitement about supporting the William Way,” he says. “We’ve even seen people taking pictures of their new keytags and posting those pictures on Facebook.”

The new benefits can be found at businesses in and out of the Gayborhood, like the 12th Street Gym, Tabu, Giovanni’s Room and many more.

Blore says additional incentives will be added throughout this year. The Member Benefits program builds on existing membership perks at the center, too, such as reduced admission to select William Way events throughout the year; discounts on enrollment to Way Gay U classes and on usage of the recently revitalized David Bohnett CyberCenter; and special borrowing rights at the center’s library.

“When people had a card, they knew they belonged to something and they were proud of it,” says Front Desk Coordinator Andrea Childs.
