Happy Veteran’s Day!

Attorneys yesterday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to enforce “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as the Log Cabin Republicans appeal the lawsuit, according to the Advocate. The latest move happens after a three-judge panel overturned a permanent injunction on DADT.

While the nation celebrates Veteran’s Day today, many in opposition of DADT are using the holiday to spotlight the importance of equality in the military, and honoring LGBT veterans who have served alongside their straight counterparts.

Robaire Watson, an openly gay U.S. Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Kansas during the Gulf War and Operation Southern Watch off the coast of Somalia, penned a guest column on Pam’s House Blend in honor of Veteran’s Day.

While Watson joins the rest of the country in remembering the 25 million veterans who have served America with great honor, he also challenges the U.S. to rethink it’s policies about who can serve openly and proudly.

“Today is not a day we can all celebrate,” he writes. “I have worn a uniform and served this country. Being a gay man in the military wasn’t about feeling a sense of entitlement, nor was it something superficial. It is knowing that the government is looking out for my best interest.”

The Human Rights Campaign joins everyone in honoring veterans today by spotlighting openly gay and lesbian military heroes on its website, along with straight allies who have risked their careers to end LGBT discrimination.
