January 2010

  • Amis – Marc Vetri promises “simple, rustic food” in Washington Square West.
  • Bar – Bar’s the name of the bar by Jason Evenchick that’s opening next to Time.
  • Carluccio’s – Former home of Shank’s and Evelyn’s has reopened as a small Italian BYOB.
  • Cedars Cafe – Middle Eastern cuisine for Frazer.
  • – Du Jour is headed to Commerce Square at 20th and Market.
  • Paesano’s – The Girard Avenue sandwich mecca has added a spot at 9th and Christian.
  • R2L – Daniel Stern’s Rae is moving to Two Liberty Place late this Fall.
  • Red Cup Cafe – A new coffee shop for Northern Liberties.
  • Rocco’s – Cheesesteaks at a drive through in Paoli.
  • Silverspoon – Farm to table BYOB for the Main Line.
  • Sugar Cube – Dessert truck headed to University City.
  • Sweet Freedom Bakery – Philadelphia’s first gluten-free bakery sets up on South Street.
  • Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting – Largest Whole Foods in PA opens at Plymouth Meeting Mall.
  • Wit or Witout – Cheesesteaks from a Rita’s Ice founder opens on Roosevelt Boulevard.
  • Zavino – Fun named pizza and wine at 13th and Sansom.

February 2010

  • Apollinare – The former Vino at the Piazza has been taken over by Italian restaurateurs.
  • Cicchetteria 19 – Former Starr chef Bill Murphy is looking to take over Di Vino.
  • Chops – Alex Plotkin is taking over the Oceanaire space at 7th and Walnut.
  • Delicatessen – Modern Jewish deli at 7th and Chestnut.
  • Domo Sushi – Opening next to King of Tandoor on Callowhill.
  • Ekta – Bryn Mawr gets its version of the Fishtown Indian restaurant  just 10 days after settlement.
  • El Sitio – South American BYOB in Collingswood.
  • Falafel Factory – Six varieties of falafel at 18th and Ranstead.
  • Fat Salmon – Shinju Sushi is moving to the Aso Sushi location on Walnut and is changing its name to Fat Salmon. Got it? Good.
  • Floret – Pond will make way for the more casual Floret, an American comfort food restaurant with European style.
  • Garces Trading Co. – Jose Garces joins forces with the PLCB in this food/wine commissary.
  • Green Leaf – New Chinese restaurant for Main Street in Manayunk.
  • Healthy Bites to-Go – Katie Cavuto’s organic market is open on the 2500 block of Christian.
  • Hoof+Fin – Lucas Manteca who has experience at the shore is opening an Argentine restaurant in the former Gayle.
  • Le Viet – Another Vietnamese restaurant for 11th and Washington.
  • Maru Global Takoyaki – Japanese street food inspired BYOB for 255 S 10th St.
  • Mas Mexicali Cantina – Former Coyote Crossing West Chester will become a Dave Magrogan restaurant.
  • Mixx – The casual restaurant from the Win Restaurant Group is headed to Villanova.
  • Sweet Tooth – Candy and nuts store replaces Pink Rose at 4th and Bainbridge.
  • Terrace Taproom – New bar in Manayunk at at Terrace and Salaignac.
  • Thoreau – Mike Jackson of Blue Sage is opening a vegetarian restaurant on Spring Garden.

March 2010

  • 500° – Rouge’s ownership is opening a burger storefront on the 1500 block of Sansom.
  • Brew – The beer half of Brew has the coolers in. Now, just that pesky liquor license.
  • Cedars Cafe – Mediterranean food in Frazer.
  • Dmitri’s – Dmitri Chimes is adding a third Mediterranean seafooder to his empire, this one in Northern Liberties.
  • Franco’s Osteria – A wood-fired oven will be the centerpiece for this City Ave restaurant.
  • Gaetano’s Italian Deli – New deli at 2nd and Christian.
  • Jay’s Favorite Sushi Bar – Sansom Street has another sushi spot.
  • Landmark Americana – Sports bar coming to Drexel’s campus.
  • Mexico on the Square – Former Savoy Deli moves to Pine Street.
  • Ro-Zu – Sushi at 7th and Bainbridge.
  • Sprig & Vine – Vegan BYOB for New Hope.
  • Tabu – Sports bar on south 12th Street.
  • Unitea – New tea cafe for West Philadelphia

April 2010

  • – Bobby Flay is opening a burger restaurant in the Raidan on Penn’s campus.
  • Cooperage – Wine bar for the Curtis Center at 7th and Sansom.
  • El Rey – Stephen Starr’s Mexican concept for 20th and Chestnut but it’s the attached speakeasy space that most intrigues.
  • Mezz Bar – The rebranded cheaper upstairs bar at Union Trust.
  • Old City Asian Bistro – The former Anjou has a new owner and concept. It’s BYO for now.
  • Rybread – Sandwich cafe for Fairmount Ave.
  • Seasons 52 – “Fresh grill” coming to the King of Prussia mall.
  • Savvas – Upscale pizza for West Philadelphia.
  • Sly Fox Brewhouse – The brew pub is moving across Rt. 113 to a bigger building.
  • Le Viet – Modern looking Vietnamese restaurant comes to 11th Street off of Washington Ave.
  • Tiffin – Wynnewood gets its own Indian.
  • TL Seafood & Steakhouse – Tony Luke is redoing the diner across from his steak shop again.
  • Wishing Well Public House – 9th and Catharine to get a bar that is not a gastropub but does have a “Shame Burger.”

May 2010

  • Amuse – French Bistro for the Starwood Hotel at 1421 Arch Street.
  • BODHI Coffee Shop – New coffee shop for the 400 block of South 2nd.
  • – The Public House, Fieled House people are opening a beer-centric mega bar in West Philadelphia.
  • Dapper Dog – It’s a late night hot dog truck for Philadelphia.
  • Epicure Cafe – Serving from breakfast to late evening in East Falls.
  • Frög Burger – Steve Poses burger stand at the Franklin Institute opens Memorial Day Weekend.
  • Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar – The latest from Dave Magrogan, this Glenn Mills spot is what the name says.
  • Jake’s Sandwich Board – New sandwich shop for 12th Street in Center City.
  • Kraftwork – Adam Ritter is opening a bar at Girard and Montgomery in Fishtown.
  • Legal Sea Foods – A second area location of this Boston-based chain is headed to the Airport.
  • Mac’s Tavern It’s Always Sunny’s Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson are involved in taking over Skinner’s in Old City.
  • Mojo Gourmet Coffee – New tweeting coffee truck for West Philadelphia.
  • Momji Sushi and Grill – New sushi for 4th Street off of South.
  • Munk & Nunn – Manayunk gets a gastropub.
  • Muntin – New Asian in old Misso’s Spruce Street location.
  • Philly Steak & Bagel Train – Former train car is now serving opposite the Inquirer building.
  • Pizzeria Stella – Stephen Starr’s pizza place is expanding next door.
  • Pure Tacos – Gluten free Mexican in Ocean City.
  • seaglass – New shore dining at the Golden Inn in Avalon.
  • Station Taproom – New bar across from the train station in Downingtown.
  • West Side Gravy – Blackbird’s Alex Capasso is looking to open a new spot in Collingswood.

June 2010

  • Black Angus Steakhouse – The old Tori’s Brickhouse location has become a moderately priced steakhouse.
  • Blue Comet – The Glenside institution has returned.
  • Brown Betty Dessert Boutique – The third Brown Betty is opening at the Shops at Liberty Place.
  • Call Me Cupcake – New twittering cupcake truck is on the prowl.
  • Center City Grille – 20 S 20th gets another shot at a bar.
  • Columbus Inn – The praised Chris D’Ambro is going to be opening a restaurant in Wilmington.
  • Crocodile – Free pizza with every beer is this bar’s hook.
  • Diving Horse – The Pub & Kitchen team opens a BYOB in Avalon.
  • Headhouse – New beer bar for the former Zot on Lombard.
  • Diving Horse – The crew from Pub & Kitchen are opening a BYOB in Avalon.
  • Le Cochon Noir – West Philadelphia outdoor barbecue is getting a roof.
  • Nana Petrillo – Coffee, Capogiro desserts and more are coming to the Piazza at Schmidt’s.
  • Olive on 3rd – Christine Fischer’s latest replaces Ava at 3rd and Gaskill.
  • Trolley Car Cafe – The offshoot of Mt. Airy’s Trolley Car Diner is set to open at South Ferry and Kelly Drive in East Falls.
  • Tweed – “Fresh, organic, local comes to the handsome Les Bons Temps space on 12th Street.

July 2010

  • Adsum – Matt Levin is taking over the Coquette space at 5th and Bainbridge.
  • – A bread shop comes to Main Street in Manayunk.
  • Artiserrie Cafe – Two of the Naked Chocolate Cafes are being rebranded and serving a more savory menu.
  • Catahoula – Rustic Louisiana replaces Saute on South Front Street.
  • Crocodile – Free pizza is the gimmick at this Old City bar.
  • El Limon – Mexican taqueria and grocery store set for Conshohocken.
  • Green House – Asian vegetarian restaurant set for 655 Haddon Avenue in Collingswood.
  • Machismo Burrito Bar – The Manayunk burrito spot opens a second local location, this one in Andorra.
  • Mumbai Bistro – Fast serve Indian food in Washington Square West.
  • Paloma – Formerly in the Northeast, Paloma will resurface on 8th Street in South Philadelphia.
  • Timber – A new bar/restaurant for Abington.
  • Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt – Center City East gets frozen yogurt.
  • Wegman’s – Malvern’s Wegman’s opens July 18th.

August 2010

  • Chhaya Cafe – A coffee shop by day, a brunch spot on weekends and a Venetian cicchetti on weekend nights.
  • Dasiwa – Sushi spot for 26th and Aspen.
  • PB & U – A peanut butter restaurant comes to Wayne.
  • Philly Pub ‘n Grub – Former NoVi has now become PPnG, a sports bar.
  • Sumo Sushi – New sushi spot for the 1300 block of Pine.
  • Sweet Ending – The corner of 13th and Walnut gets the second Sweet Ending FroYo spot.
  • Tiffin – The rapidly expanding chain has opened in Bryn Mawr.
  • Yogurt City – More frozen yogurt for 13th and Walnut.

  • Aneau – Meredith’s in Berwyn has become Aneau, a bistro and wine bar.
  • Artful Dodger – The long-time 2nd and Pine bar has reopened under the ownership of former employees.
  • Baby Blues – Sansom Street in University City is the location for this California BBQ spot.
  • Biba – It isn’t a Tria but it will be a wine bar from Jon Myerow for University City.
  • The Bottle Shop – Craft-beer-to-go spot for East Passyunk.
  • Cafe L’Aube – The Spring Garden neighborhood gets a branch of South Street crepe cafe.
  • Chipotle – The former Susanna Foo is set to become a Mexican burrito restaurant.
  • Gino’s Hamburgers – The old-time burger chain is making a comeback, the first location set for King of Prussia.
  • JG Domestic – Jose Garces’ all-American concept is headed to the Cira Center.
  • Liberté – New lobby lounge for Sofitel.
  • Night Kitchen Bakery – The Chestnut Hill bakery has added a cafe.
  • Nina’s Trattoria – The Rizzo Mural building might be getting an Italian restaurant on the ground floor.
  • Prime 505 – A steakhouse gives Collingswood another non-Italian option.
  • Village Belle – Former Frederick’s has become a Mediterranean themed restaurant.
  • Whisper – Denim has bowed out to the Whisper name.

November 2010

  • Agiato – Joseph Scarpone who ran Sovalo opens a panini and wine bar on Main Street in Manayunk.
  • Brindle Cafe – A locavore BYOB for Girard Avenue.
  • Capital Grille – King of Prussia gets another steakhouse.
  • Cookie Confidential – Take that cupcakes. A cookie shop is opening at 517 S 5th Street.
  • Famous-Daves – The barbecue chain is coming to the 1700 block of Chestnut.
  • Fuel – A branch of the under 500 calorie quick serve restaurant will be opening at 1225 Walnut Street.
  • Headhouse – The short-lived Headhouse is back with Madame Saito in charge.
  • Jet Wine Bar – New wine bar for the 1500 block of South Street.
  • Khyber Pass Pub – The Khyber has stopped music and is now a beer-centric spot with a Southern menu.
  • Kitchen Consigliere – A former mobster is opening a lunch and light dinner spot in Collingswood.
  • Krispy Kreme – The doughnut chain is reintroducing itself to the Philadelphia market.
  • Main Street Market – It’s a neighborhood grocery for Main Street in Manayunk.
  • P.J. Whelihans – The chain expands again, this time to Downingtown.
  • Soup Kitchen – Breakfast and coffee spot on Susquehana in Fishtown.
  • Sticks & Stones – E. Passyunk to get a non-Italian, non-Mexican place to eat.
  • Twenty9 – The former Boathouse Great Valley gets new life.
  • Umpasri – Thai BYOB for Cherry Hill.
  • – The White Dog is looking to open a branch in Wayne on Lancaster Ave.

December 2010

  • Colosseo – Pizza for 15th and Spring Garden.
  • The Corner – The former APO is getting a transformation, former Buddakan chef Scott Swiderski will be in the kitchen.
  • The Dandelion – Stephen Starr’s handsome English pub opens at 18th and Sansom.
  • Dobbs – The former music venue on South Street is making a comeback.
  • Five Guys Burgers – A second Center City location is set for 1109 Chestnut.
  • Guapos Tacos – Taco truck from Jose Garces.
  • Kokopelli – Southwestern tapas for Chestnut Street.
  • Leila Cafe – The cafe from 13th and Pine is on the move to 1356 South Street.
  • Manakeesh Cafe Bakery – Lebanese bakery for 45th and Walnut.
  • Marabella Meatball Company – A meatball shop at 1211 Walnut Street.
  • Mondial Cafe – Yet another cafe for East Passyunk.
  • One Shot Coffee – The Northern Liberties coffee shop is moving to bigger digs at American and George Streets.
  • Philadelphia Belle – Paddlewheel ship will be serving brunch, lunch and dinner on the Delaware come spring time.
  • Tyson Bees – Tyson Wong Ophaso’s getting his own food truck this fall.
  • Yamaka Sushi Bar – A small sushi bar with takeout on 20th Street off of Walnut.
