New Chef (And 1,000 Pies) At Red Owl Tavern

Red Owl Tavern has a couple big things happening this month.

First, they have a new exec chef overseeing the kitchen. Caitlin Mateo (that’s her up there) is ex of Square 1682 and the Turney/Safran empire, and has now taken over the top gig at Red Owl in the Hotel Monaco. Currently, she’s tweaking dishes on the current menu at Red Owl and running specials to test new dishes that she’s planning on adding to the board when she launches all new menus in the first week of January.

Also, she came on board just in time to ramp things up for Red Owl’s 2nd annual “Month of 1,000 Pies.”

The month of 1,000 pies is pretty much what it sounds like–Red Owl is trying really hard to sell 1,000 pies between now and Thanksgiving, November 24. They’re doing pies in two varieties–apple streusel and pumpkin, and selling then for $12 each (or two for $20). And with every pie sold, they’re going to donate one to Philabundance–the local organization working to make sure that no one goes hungry in our region.

So yeah, you get to buy a pie AND feel good about yourself after. That’s a win-win. Also, for those of you who aren’t really into things like planning ahead, Red Owl will be selling its pies across the grab-and-go counter they have set up right through Thanksgiving day. So if you’re in need of a last-minute pie for dinner, or as a gift to bring to someone else’s house, now you know where to go.
