Show Off Your Chili and Beer Making Skills

Next Saturday, February 27th is the Philadelphia Homebrew Club’s Winter’s Warmers Chili Cookoff & Homebrew Festival, AKA the perfect time for you to show off your killer recipes. If you feel that your creations are worthy of judgement, here’s what you need to know in order to participate:

The chili competition includes two categories: Traditional, which includes any meat or a combination of meats, red chili peppers, spices, and whatever else you’d like to put in, with the exception of beans, pasta, and garnish. The second category is Anything Goes, which literally means anything goes (you can use beans and pasta). For each category, there will be a cash prize for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and People’s Choice.

Online registration ends tomorrow, February 20th. There’s a $40 entry fee for the chili cookoff that includes entry to the competition, one t-shirt, and an event glass. Checkout begins at 1:30 p.m. and judging is at 3 p.m. You can register and see all of the rules and information here.

For the homebrew comptetition, the PHC is looking for entries of strong beer, dark beer, anything you’d associate with winter. You can enter more than one brew, but each of them have to be in a different sub-category (Belgian tripel, Belgian dark strong ale, etc.). You must be over 21, and the beer must be made using private equipment with ingredients available to the general public.

Online registration ends tomorrow at 3 p.m. and is $6 per entry. There are six different drop off locations you need to deliver your homebrew to no later than 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24th: Keystone Homebrew Supply (Montgomeryville, PA), Brew Your Own Bottle (Vestment, NJ), Brew Your Own Beer (Havertown, PA), Home Sweet Homebrew (Philadelphia), Philly Homebrew Outlet (both East and West). For all of the information and to register, go here.

If you can’t cook for your life (it’s OK, I can’t either) or don’t homebrew, just head over there anyway to try the entries for yourself. Tickets can be purchased here, and on top of eating a ton of chili samples and trying out some homebrews, you’re also supporting the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

Winter’s Warmers is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Skybox Event Center on 2424 East York Street.
