Resurrection Ale House Is Changing Hands

Leigh Maida sent out a message to subscribers of the Resurrection Ale House mailing list that the her and Brendan Hartranft’s Graduate Hospital beer bar is under agreement of sale. The letter notes that the employees will stay on after the acquisition, though the fried chicken may not. The note says that the chicken might pop up at the couple’s other bars, Memphis Taproom, Local 44 or Strangelove’s.

As for the new owners, that remains a mystery.

The full letter:

Dear Friends of Resurrection Ale House,

It is with equal parts excitement and sadness that we write to let you know that Resurrection Ale House is under Agreement of Sale. All parties are working feverishly to make the tentative date of September 21, 2014 (also known as our 5th Anniversary!) a time of happy celebration and smooth transition to the new owners.

As you would expect, leading up to the transfer, we are throwing one hell of a beer soaked party!

Starting NOW enjoy a seriously amazing series of daily beer promotions (the list is growing, follow us at @ResurrectionPHL to keep up!)

…And we know you're already excited for our Goose Island Migration Week tap takeover this Tuesday (8/5). Full event details are online at

Plus! Expect a final "Fifth Anniversary/Closing Night" Beer Bash including a full tap takeover from Allagash and Sierra Nevada — featuring their Beer Camp collaboration beer "Myron's Walk". (Stay tuned for a confirmed party date.)

All interested parties may expect a smooth transition. Fans of the Resurrection Ale House staff can expect to find their favorites faces around after the departure of Leigh Maida and Brendan Hartranft. Devotees of Resurrection Ale House's Twice Fried Chicken are invited to follow along on Twitter @MemphisTaproom1 / @ Local44beerbar / @StrangelovesBar to see where it pops up next.

Any holders of Resurrection Ale House gift cards are invited to use them soon!

And that friends, for now, is that.

They’d better not be selling it to Matt Swartz…

    • JB

Well technically it would be sold to his wife Colleen!

  • JB

So what happens to those gift certificates after the sale? If they’re no good after 9/21/14 that would be pretty crappy! You could include the value of the gift cards in the sale…so no one gets the proverbial “screw”!

    • Boo-urns

If they want to do the right thing they should honor them at Memphis Taproom, Local 44 or Strangeloves.

Very curious to hear the story behind getting rid of the place from their portfolio…

      • Question

This was in their press release: “Any holders of Resurrection Ale House gift cards are invited to use them soon. (Being stuck holding the bag on a useless gift card is just the worst. We’re looking at you James Restaurant.) ” Are their gift certificates good at their surviving restaurants? If not it’s James 2

  • Dan

This is a shame! For the most part, this was really their best restaurant! Anyone know if the chefs/cooks are still there and will be staying on? Doesn’t sound promising if the chicken is going away…
