Jersey Gumbo Cook-Off & Music Festival

Have no Saturday plans at the shore this weekend? How about giving this a shot. The second annual Jersey Gumbo Cook-Off & Music Fest is happening this Saturday 6/21, from noon until 10 p.m., and if you like gumbo as much as I do, this is something you’ll definitely want to hit up.

Go to Somers Point Fire Company #1, located by the ball fields at 447 Bethel Road in Somers Point, NJ, where you’ll find more than 20 local chefs, restaurants and celebrity cooks serving up a variety of different gumbos: Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, Seafood Gumbo, Jersey Crab Gumbo, Okra Gumbo, Shrimp Gumbo, Vegetarian Gumbo, even Pork and Beef Gumbo. And you can have at all of it, all for the price of a $25 admission ticket ($22 if you buy in advance here). After all is said and done, there will be a “People’s Choice” for best Gumbo., and the first place prize is $1,000.

If you get all gumbo’d out, there will be some other food available: Formica Brotherstomato pies, canoli and biscotti, Jr’s Donuts and Dogs, fresh grilled Jersey seafood, real barbecue from The Grizzly Guy and frozen treats from Mr. Ice Cream.

The Fest also features a beverage garden with beer, wine, mixed drinks, Caribbean Rum Punch, and of course, New Orleans Hurricanes. All of that, and live music from a bunch of different rock n’ roll bands pretty much guarantee a good time.

A portion of the proceeds from “Jersey Gumbo” will benefit three Community service organizations: Seashore Gardens, Access One and the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Organization.
