SoWe Makes Way for The Strip Joint

Yesterday marked the last night for SoWe at 918 S 22nd Street. The Graduate Hospital (South West Center City) gastropub has closed to be rebranded.

The new concept, which is aiming to open on Saturday, January 25th, will be the The Strip Joint – “for the love of steak.”

The following was posted late last week on SoWe’s Facebook page.

We’ve enjoyed almost two great years as one your favorite neighborhood gastropubs here in Southwest Center City. Effective this Monday, January 20th, we’ll be closing our doors for a few days to work on bringing you and Philadelphia an exciting new dining concept!

We appreciate and value your continued support, and can’t wait to share this new experience with you. Stay tuned for more information about our grand opening next Saturday, January 25th! We’ll be coming back with even better dinner, drinks & brunch items!

In the meantime, we hope to see you this weekend for dinner, drinks & brunch before we give you something brand new to sink your teeth into!

More information has been revealed on the concept. The idea is to bring a value to the steakhouse experience with a full steak dinner coming in under $20. In addition to the cocktails, there will be a neighborhood bar vibe with craft cocktails, craft beer and a bar menu.

Is The Strip Joint name an improvement over SoWe?

They can rename it, but will the kitchen improve beyond mediocre in 1 week?

Of course, because G-HO is a perfect neighborhood for carnivores with big budgets! I for one think the location would be perfect for an AUTHENTIC Turkish restaurant!!

I think they said the steak dinner would be coming in at under $20. So it’s not about big budgets.

Also, while an authentic Turkish restaurant would be great, it would be hard for a non-Turkish owner to pull that off (the SoWe ownership isn’t changing, just the concept).

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like this concept either. I have a hard time understanding why you wouldn’t just travel a block up
to Sidecar or a couple blocks over to resurrection where you can get
better food, a better atmosphere and better beer. I would favor something bourbon focused as you aren’t going to compete in that area on beer and typical bar food (something like Lloyd with a high-quality niche food like fancy grilled cheeses).

I usually only post troll comments but I thought I would respond and mention that prior to SoWe, the space WAS a Turkish restaurant with an owner with a reputation for being pervy and churlish. It was a gag. Cheers mate

I live in the neighborhood, I don’t like the name and really don’t want to post a checkin to facebook or anywhere else. The truth is I don’t go out to eat steak… we make better steak at home. I hope it does well but I don’t see it being a place I am going to hang out.
