Labor Day Marks Restaurant Closings and For Sale Listings

It used to be that the first of the year was the death knell for restaurants. Establishments that couldn’t bare the expense of making it through the winter months often bowed out right after the busy holiday season. But this year we’re seeing shutterings and sales right after Labor Day.

As we mentioned yesterday, Sophia’s didn’t return from summer vacation but it is far from the only closure or sale we’ve seen over the last couple of days. Michael Klein reports on the seeming demise of Village Belle. And today he has news that City Garden has closed at 18th and JFK after 16-years. Maybe Neil Stein is finally ready to take it over?

Philebrity is reporting that Finnigan’s Wake is for sale for a whopping $5 million. The 19,000 square feet has got to be attractive to someone.

Down the road in Fishtown, Bubba’s Texas BBQ is on the market but at $5,000 a month, we’re not sure potential restaurateurs will be lining up.

What happened to the Finnegans sweetheart deal with the roof deck, etc?

    • JA

It’s built in the $5 Million!

The Bubba’s one is pretty funny. He is now on food network as a hot sh*t bbq guy. Though he appears incapable of getting his bbq restaurant through a year.

Bubba is long gone, he left the restaurant when he got on the show.

What I never understood was his delay in opening was his custom built smoker from Texas. But in his show he builds smokers. So why didn’t he build his own?

Because then it wouldn’t be from Texas.

I’ve been to Bubba’s twice – the food was good, but I’ve had better. The waitress was REALLY weird and offputting though. I got the distinct impression I wasn’t particularly wanted. Guess I wasn’t the only one who got that message.
