Shifty’s Taco Is Now Open in Brewerytown

Shifty’s Taco wasted no time opening after getting the go-ahead from the Health Department. In a tweet on Friday evening the Girard Avenue taco shop announced they had passed their final inspection and planned to open the next evening for dinner. Zack Shell, who was formerly a manager at El Fuego will be operating Shifty’s in a soft-opening mode today and tomorrow with hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Shifty’s Taco will be serving up their full menu and hours. Delivery (Broad to Schuylkill, Girard to Spring Garden) is about a week away and this weekend will see brunch launch with options like huevos rancheros, chorizo egg burritos and plantain bread pudding.

Shifty’s Taco Hours

So, after alot of anticipation finally made it to Shifty’s last night and sad to say, it was ok, but something of a letdown. Yes, the space is kind of kool, but quite small and not very conducive to eating in with just one large table and three window stools. As for the food? I think they need to find an authentic Mexican to help out. The flavors were overall rather bland and unremarkable. The tacos had minimal fillings, though the soft, fresh flour taco shells were nice, but at $8 for three, are way overpriced. Realistically, they’re worth about $1 – $1.50 ea. Even the pico de gallo was bland and flavorless….oh, and that costs $1. On top of that, it’s a cash only operation…no cards, no debit. I mean, come on, folks…this is the 21st century! If you want really flavorful Mexican tacos, you can do much better down on Washington Ave. for a lot less $$$. Shifty’s might be a nice addition to the neighborhood, but it absolutely must do better than this by offering flavor and value, rather than something that’s truly just mediocre…or I won’t be a regular, even though I want to be.
