UPDATED: Sylva Senat On “Unofficial Vacation” From Tashan

The rumors have been circulating for a few days, but now we know for sure. Sylva Senat is no longer the chef at Tashan. Or Tiffin, Tiffin Bistro or any other of owner Munish Narula‘s properties.

I chatted briefly with Senat this afternoon, and while he didn’t have much to add (other than a confirmation that he is, in fact, no longer chef at Tashan), he did say that he was now a “free agent” (meaning that he doesn’t have another gig lined up yet), that his tenure in the kitchen at Tashan was “cut short” (meaning that he didn’t walk out on his own, but was asked to leave), and that he thinks the reason he was let go was because he “care[d] too much” (though, honestly, I’m not entirely sure what that means).

“It’s still a surreal moment,” Senat told me. “Articles are still coming out with my name on [them] for Tiffin Bistro, Groupon, et cetera.”

Narula hasn’t returned calls for comment on the loss of the chef that opened Tashan to critical acclaim. But needless to say, if there’s anyone out there looking to open a modern Indian restaurant (or, really, any other kind of restaurant) and is in the market for a blooded, veteran, award-winning chef, Senat would probably be happy to take your call.

UPDATE: According to the Insider, Kirti Pant, the chef brought in by Narula to run his new Tiffin Bistro, is now the chef at Tashan.

    Not surprising.

What is surprising is that you managed not to use a curse word.

No wonder people think Munish is a douche. The old chef’s food rocked. Better than any tiffin. Are they getting rid of the great Tashan dishes, or is Munish just ripped them?

    • Sanjay

Munish is a douche, Scumbag He never pays company on time Companies are constantly looking for him for money! I am so glad chef Sylva left him and Yeah! What goes around comes around Your restaurant will get far with the GM Being pissed drunk every night at the bar.

    • Mack

Munish the Creator!!! The biggest joke in Philly!!! The biggest dirt bag!!!

Tashan was already living on borrowed time. The place is going to close. If it was not for Carl Dranoff’s money it would not even have opened. Narula and his low life partner real estate Gagan who screws people out of money. What goes around comes around.

    • Elle

Haven’t heard any of these “low life” rumors, but the borrowed time thing is spot on. It doesn’t matter how good the food is; if people aren’t interested (for price reasons, cuisine reasons, location, whatever), the restaurant isn’t staying afloat. Dems the breaks.

Not shocked at all. Having met Munish in regard to the Tashan property, I was shocked to hear that he had Sylva not only working at Tiffin on Girard but, he also had him running deliveries for the place! Can you imagine being a seasoned Chef who was hired to cook suddenly finding yourself running deliveries? Then the place ends up taking close to a year to open! I definitely agree that the place is going to be closing and I am happy for Sylva. He’s a nice guy and a great Chef.

This is bad news for all of us who love his cooking. Sylva – we will follow you to your next venture!!!!
